How the volume is worked out
Sawn lumber
The three measurements in centimetres are multiplied and divided by a million: thickness × width × length ÷ 1,000,000. A 5 × 20 × 300 cm board is 0.030 m³; a hundred of them, 3.000 m³.
Logs
Round wood is treated as a cylinder: (diameter ÷ 2)² × π × length ÷ 1,000,000. Measuring the diameter at the middle of the log is closer to the truth than measuring at the butt end, which overstates the volume.
Which units?
Every measurement is in centimetres, length included (3 metres = 300). The result is shown to three decimals; the arithmetic itself uses the full value.
